Si Miriam Palma Defensor Santiago ay isang Pilipinang pulitiko at kasalukuyang senador ng Pilipinas. Madalas siyang tawaging Miriam. Siya ang tagapagtatag at kasalukuyang lider ng People's Reforms Party. Naparangalan siya noong 1985 bilang TOYM Awardee para sa batas.

Talambuhay

Si Miriam ay ipinanganak noong Hunyo 15, 1945 sa siyudad ng Iloilo, Iloilo. Sina District Judge Benjamin P. Defensor at Dimpna Palma Defensor ang kanyang mga magulang. Noong kanyang kabataan, nakuha niya ang pinakamataas na karangalan sa kanyang pagtatapos sa mababa at mataas na paaralan.

Sa kabila ng tatlong-buwang pagkakasakit, nagtapos si Miriam bilang magna cum laude sa kursong Bachelor of Arts in Political Science sa Unibersidad ng Pilipinas Visayas noong 1965. Sa halip na apat na taon,natapos ni Miriam ang kanyang kurso sa loob lamang ng tatlo't kalahating taon.

Sa limampung-taong kasaysayan ng The Philippine Collegian, ang opisyal na pahayagan ng Unibersidad ng Pilipinas, si Miriam ang kauna-unahang babaeng naging punong patnugot (editor-in-chief). Dalawang beses rin siyang ginawang Corps sponsor ng Reserve Officer TraXsscsfefdfscsccscdcdcrvdvvdvvdvdvdvddvdvdv[ == http://www.example.com na kawing ng pamagat == Dwddsdscscddvdvrgrrvrvvkkcskcsk]ining Corps. Sa mga sumunod na taon, dalawang titulong pangkagandahan (beauty titles) ang kanyang natanggap kahit na wala sa kanyang karanasan ang sumali sa mga paligsahan ng kagandahan.

Noong estudyante siya, lumahok si Miriam sa maraming timpalak sa pananalumpati at pampublikong pagsasalita sa mataas na paaralan, kolehiyo, at paaralan sa batas (law school).

Noong 1969, nagtapos siya ng Bachelor of Laws na may karangalang cum laude sa Unibersidad ng Pilipinas sa Diliman. Naging kamag-aral niya sina dating Senador Franklin Drilon, San Juan Representative Ronaldo Zamora, at Eli Pamatong. Kumuha si Miriam ng Bar Exam noong 1969 at nakakuha ng 78% average grade, na nagdulot sa kanya ng kalungkutan. Ang kanyang mga kaklase na sina Zamora at Drilon ay nasa una at ikatlong puwesto.

Upang mapatunayan ang kanyang kagalingan at malampasan ang lungkot na nadama noong nakaraang pagsusulit sa bar, naisip ni Miriam na kumuha pa ng mas mataas na pag-aaral. Pumasok siya sa University of Michigan Law School noong 1974 hanggang 1976 at kumuha ng titulong Master sa mga Batas at Doktor ng Juridical Science.

Noong 1995, sa edad na limampu, kinumpleto niya ang mga kinakailangan para sa isang akademikong Master of Arts in Religious Studies sa Maryhill School of Theology nang may average grade na 1.25. Noong 1996, pumasok siya sa isang Summer Program ng mga tagubilin para sa mga abogado sa Harvard Law School. Noong 1997, pumasok naman siya sa Summer Program para sa Batas sa Oxford University. Matapos ng isang taon, tinagurian na siyang isang Harvard at Oxford alumna, kahit na hindi siya naging kabilang sa isang regular na programa at hindi rin nakapagtapos ng anumang akademikong degree program sa pamantasan.

Noong 1986, kinikilala si Miriam bilang isa sa mga Sampung Natitirang Young Professionals ng Philippine Junior Chamber of Commerce. Noong 1988, ginawaran siya ng Ramon Magsaysay Award para sa Government Service, ang lokal na katumbas ng Nobel Prize.

Noong 1996 naman,pinarangalan si Miriam ng The Australian, isang pang-internasyonal na magazine, bilang isa sa The 100 Most Powerful Women in the World.
